I have a cream Burmese 15 years old and she has always done this. If fed anywhere near a mat she covers her bowl when she is finished eating.

Burmese have been likened to dogs so I have always assumed she is doing what dogs do when they bury their bone.

Because she is a house cat I also like to think that she is a neat and tidy little furry person.
