Thanks for your input, Tiffany. You may be right because over 18 months ago, when we moved to our new home, Skunk became dis-oriented and went missing for about 10 days in a pretty severe snow storm for this area.
We found her quite a ways off under a neighbors deck and she has stayed around here ever since. Perhaps this strange behavior started way back then. We can't be sure.
Anyway, I left this detail out of my original story so as not to corrupt anyone's opinions. I guess it is possible that this stress has caused some long term problems with Skunk that manifests as "extreme caution".
Anyway, thank you for your input.

Well, that's a good question. And, I am not sure. However, while I was reading your post, I kept thinking that maybe something bad or serious happened while he was out.
Run in with a snake? Dog? Mean person? I, of course, can't be sure, though. I hope everything turns out OK.
