I asked my vet about this and yes it is a sexual thing for both male and female. that's why they raise their butts up with a straight tail. giving the nonexistent cat access...my cats follow me all around at night until i do my nightly duties of "stroking/spanking" them.

my cat is very old and fat. she's never liked to be rubbed or loved on..not until her old age. but she has always loved to be patted on her bum. she'll arch her back just begging for more (ha this sounds so wrong doesn't it?). she also likes her back to be scratched and patted as well. I can't believe I found that other cats enjoy this too! we always just thought she was a kinky crazy little kitty.

My Calico, Minou as well as most of the cats that came before her all loved to have bum spankie. I discovered it years ago with one of my cats while doing rubbins. I sort of tapped lightly on her touche in front of her stiff tail with a whimsical 'naught kitty' comment of endearment and she got righ in to it.
Minou is very affectionate and is less than bashful about waking up from a snooze and steam rolling at me no matter where I am and settling into my cupped arm accross my tummy for rubbins. She will even dash on to the bed in the middle of the night when I get up to go potty and come back to bed. In a flash she is snuggles in to my arm full-tilt doing paw paws on my arm and purring her head off untill she has had enough and then she jumps down and sneaks off to a favorite corner for another snooze. I have learned that this spank bummie might have a possible sexual overtone because when she wants rubbies her tail is always ram rod straight in the air and if I run my hand up it as I stroke her back she loves it no end. The same with bum spankie. I keep it to a minimum otherwise I get nothing else done all day. They seem to know very well what makes them happy.
