Senile cat and toilet paper

cat and toilet paper usual behavior

cat and toilet paper usual behavior

Senile cat and toilet paper. Just found this site and I love it! Over 50+ years of cat ownership and I think I have seen every behavior here! I always just figured he/she is a Cat, what do you expect! LOL

This one how ever has me baffled! Harriet is a very pretty, very healthy, 17 year old calico with medium length hair. She is a very sweet girl, spayed as soon as possible, of course, and indoors only.

She has always been a 'nice' cat in our household of multiple and various cats, she sleeps on my pillow with me. I wouldn't say she never displayed any 'strange' behaviors, until now.

She has been waking up in the night and stealing/unrolling/destroying, etc., the toilet paper roll. If there is an empty roll in the trash she will dig it out and carry it around the house. All the while she is voicing a very loud, unusual (somewhat annoying at 2am) meow similar to what a cat in heat would.

She has never done anything like this before. When I hide the toilet paper roll where she can not get it she will find some sort of tissue in the trash and do the same thing but the empty rolls are her favorite.

I don't want to stop her, some cats/kittens do this and I really don't care, sometimes I'll save the empty roll for her. The question is, Why on earth would she Start this sort of thing at 17 years old?!

Any ideas?
"Cats rule--dogs drool" LOL!

So If you don't want her to get the toilet paper, try closing the door to the bathroom.

New and Improved!

A simple explanation could be that she never realized how fun they were before. I have a young cat who has been around cardboard boxes all his young life and never messed with them.

Then one day, after I threw a box on the floor, it was suddenly interesting. Now he loves to hide in them, push them around, chew on them, etc. Maybe she saw you throw one away for the first time, and it was suddenly awesome to play with?

yowling cat
by: Anonymous

my cat (18 yrs) doesn't do anything with toilet paper rolls or anything else, but he is doing the yowling like a cat in heat. Did I mention HE? He was neutered at 6 mos, and has displayed normal cat behavior all along.

But he started this yowling in the last 1 1/2 years. It's very irritating, especially in the middle of the night. Any ideas?

Cats Huh!
by: Tiffany

Well, first off, let me just say that I am still laughing from the Homeward Bound comment. Luv it!
As far as your little lady goes, it's a definite head scratcher.

I have seen this behavior displayed many times in my 4-leggers, but normally begin seeing it long before the age of 17. Maybe you are right. Maybe she is getting a little senile.

But, at her age (119 in human years for Pete's sake), I think you are also right in saying, "What's the harm?"

If it makes her happy & isn't hurting her, let her continue on with the toilet paper roll.
Thanks for sharing!
