Purple Pipecleaners and paper

My beloved male 8month old Silver Tabby Bella has become rather possessive of a bright purple pipe-cleaner lol. I bought a whole bunch of them in many bright shades to play with and he will only touch the purple one.

we have another cat 8 month old(they are brother and sister)female calico tortie "Snuggles" and whenever she or anyone else tries to pick it up, Bella repeatedly jumps and paws the air and starts running up and down the hallway with his mouth open makin a high pitched squealing noise like he is having his claws pulled off.

Its really bizarre and I have never seen anything like it. He also loves eating paper, he tears tiny pieces up and eats it. Anyone else have this very strange behavior with their cats?
