My Maine Coon Garfield stares too! He stares at himself in the mirror, I guess because he is admiring his good looks! He also watches/stares at people I think it is because he is smart and interested in what is going on.

My Ju Ju bear (British short hair mix) use to stare for hours at the wall. Strange, right? Well, she was sitting with her face only 2 inches away from it!
I suspected that there were rodents in the walls or something, or maybe the house was haunted. Or she found humans so distasteful that she'd rather stare at the wall ; )
Now she stares at the front door, I think guarding it, or waiting for someone to come home. We do have other cats so she may be waiting for them too.
Mainly, I think in her mind, she is guarding the entrance to her den (and fridge).
