Jeckle and Hyde Cat

by Catherine
(Howick)

We have recently adopted a kitten, a little boy. I have had cats and kittens all my life but never have I seen such a change in personality as I did tonight. We took the little guy back to the barn, where we adopted him from, to show the girl there how he was doing.

Normally a fairly even tempered kitten he suddenly turned into a monster hissing, growling, claws-out scratching and biting. I rather think that it had something to do with all the other cats present but am unsure. Anybody out there have any idea?

He is a very busy kitten - busier than any other kitten I've ever had. Last week he unplugged my freezer. I lost everything. On the plus side I was getting around to cleaning the freezer. It just happened a little sooner, that's all.

He's back home now and a happy little guy. There will be no more visits to the barn. Anyone have any idea of what went on in his little head? Why the Jeckle & Hyde cat routine?
Cheers, Catherine

Thanks Lorinne

Hello Lorinne,

Thanks for the comment. I think that perhaps it is bad memories.
He's such a happy camper here but when a farm hand from the barn where we adopted came around he was less than hospitable. It is not the girl, I am sure since she cared for him at the barn, but perhaps the barn smells which triggered his rude attitude towards her.
In another situation, too long to go into here, we are fostering, for a couple of days, another cat from the same barn and our little guy is not pleased. As long as we keep the fostered cat out of sight our guy is okay, if in sight of the fostered cat there are growls and warnings. Silly little boy! ;)
Thanks again,
Catherine

It could be bad memories
by: Lorinne

Some times an animal, no matter what kind if they are abused previously by who ever had him will show signs of aggression. He may have been having some bad memories of the place that he was before.

A long time ago i had a cat that was abused by a person and that person visited me for a few minutes and my cat just about had a major panic attack. Cats remember things. Some cats more than others.

It sure does sound like you have your hands full with this little guy. I have heard lots of cat story's but unplugging the freezer is a first for me!!

The way you described his freaking out at the barn was most likely the other cats. But maybe something bad happened there to him or he has bad memories of the place?

It may also be that he is happy in his new loving home and thought you were returning him to the barn (not just visiting). Or he wanted to go back home to unplug the freezer again?
