Cats strange urination

by Amanda

Okay this is about my cats strange urination. I have a cat and he is about 4 years old and very healthy. But he has a strange urination problem. We can not seem to figure out whats wrong. We have asked vets after vets and nothing that they say seems to work.

He tends to urinate on our couches, and on certain spots on our floor. Now, he has a litter box that we clean out and change out to make sure he can use it. We have another cat that is completely the opposite. He goes in his litter box and he is also very healthy. We can not figure out what his problem is? Does anyone have any ideas?

We really don't want to have to give him up but we can't handle him anymore, it's just to much. He is also very mean sometimes, we are always so nice to him but he just doesn't want to come up to us.

Sometimes he comes up to me and my mom, because I'm younger and he likes to be around kids (he knows). We would just like to know what his problem is because we love him and we don't want him to have leave our family.

About the issues

My suggestion is to get another litter box and put it in a separate room. Also, clean the spots he likes to go frequently with special odor control cleaners. Cats have very strong noses and he will continue to use the same spots until his scent is removed completely.

You might try swatting him or spraying him with water as punishment. This is tricky though, because you have to catch him in the act or he won't realize what is the problem. If you see him going on the floor, pick him up, swat/spray him and put him in the litter box.

He will eventually learn that peeing on the floor will result in swatting/spraying and avoid it. However, be sure not to overdo the punishment or he will become afraid of you.

Cats urination issue
by: Cindi

After reading your story I thought I would throw in my 2 cents. It sounded like you have 1 litter box for 2 cats. It might be worth a try adding a dedicated litter box for the cat with the urination issue.

We had some friends go through a similar problem and they were able to correct it but it took some work! They put the cat in a separate room with his dedicated litter box. They put his food and water and some toys in the room and kept the door closed. After a few days of using his new box they opened the door.

Too this day he still uses the liter box in the separate room. In fact it would seem he now considers this room his own territory and spends a lot of time in there protecting his space. I hope things work out with your Kitty!
