Cat Night of Fright

We got our Siamese cat a year and a half ago from a rescue center. He is normally exceedingly calm, and takes everything in stride. He is very curious and if there is anything new or strange in the house, he is right in there examining it.

I had only seen him startled on one occasion, which he quickly got over. (He did not like our large, stuffed Halloween witch.)
The other night we were all home and he all of a sudden went on a tear as if pursued by the hounds of hell.

NO one had heard or seen a thing. For the next two days he hid under the bed and when he came out, he was edgy and skittish, always looking over his shoulder.

This behavior was so unlike him that we took him to the vet to rule out physical causes. He is now back to his usual self. Has anyone else experienced something similar?
