Why do cats eat carpet? I have a 6 month old kitten who digs and eats the carpet. She has destroyed about a foot of carpet so far and I'm not sure how to stop this behavior. She has several scratching posts and scratch blocks, but still she uses the carpet. Do you have any ideas on how to stop this carpet eating habit? Please HELP!
I have found that a towel with vinegar on it works for keeping my cat from digging and eating the carpet and fibers.

may or may not work by: Anonymous
My cat ate the carpet too. She had two spots in particular. I tried switching her food to what I had fed her about a year before (Iams orange) instead of the Iams weight control, in case she was missing something in her diet.
As a last resort, I also had some Absorbine liniment that I put in a spray bottle and sprayed her favorite two eating spots with. It's been 3 weeks and I haven't seen her eating the carpet yet.
Hopefully the problem has been solved with one or both methods. I hope this may help someone.

spice it up!! by: Anonymous
cats and dogs have very similar taste-buds to our own. i had a dog who would chew on the table legs for hours. one of our friends suggested we put Tabasco sauce on it. we tried that and she stopped chewing because it burned her mouth!! now, i wouldn't put Tabasco on your carpet, but you could sprinkle it with white pepper or chili powder, that way you can just vacuum it up. put something on it to make it taste really bad and your kitty should stop eating it.

I wish you could see the massive holes in my carpet. I have yet to find an answer to this, I even tried anti depressants for cats.

I've never heard of this, so I don't have much to offer - except take him to a vet. Maybe his body is short on something and it drives him to eat carpet? If it can happen with people why not with cats? Good luck - I hope the vet can help you! I also wonder if some of that Feliway spray or some other type of repellent spray might do the trick.
