Cat Cleaning Itself

If i stroke my cats back it cleans itself savagely. whenever i stroke or scratch my cats back it salivates and starts cleaning itself very hard. If i hold it from cleaning itself it will just poke its tongue in and out and in and out. This is some very odd feline behavior.
